Dear Dr. Jeremy Holmes,
Recently a news on holding an “Iranian Congress of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychotherapy” was released in a Telegram channel where your name is mentioned as one of the speakers of the so-called Congress. As Freudian Association is the only official organization of psychoanalysis in Iran which has been working under the license of the Interior Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran since 2006, and as the Board members of the Association has raised a legal complaint against one of the responsibles of the so-called congress with the following charges:
Title counterfeiting as psychiatrist for thirty years
Title counterfeiting as psychotherapist for thirty years
Title counterfeiting as psychoanalyst for thirty years
along with other charges and against other people, so the case is under investigation in Government Employees Court by the third branch interrogations office at the moment, hence we are informing you that if the information is authenticated, Freudian Association will reserve its right to pursue this case legally with all of its force against you as an accessory.
It is notified that Freudian Association has started to extensively reveal the facts about this person’s academic degree in its official website since two years ago, so that nobody of his colleagues, relatives and acquaintances can claim not being aware about this matter.

Appendix 1: A copy of the open letter of Dr. Mitra Kadivar the president of Freudian Association to the head of Judiciary, with the annexes. This letter has already been sent to respectable Prosecutor of Tehran by an order from his Excellency Mr. Khalafi, President of Office of the Head of Judiciary to “inspect, take legal action and declare result”. The text of this letter is also mentioned in the Freudian Association complaint at the Government Employees Court.

Dear Freudian association, I note your letter. However I deplore the endemic rivalries and narcissism of minor differences which afflicts psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy in the West. It is very sad to see that your country is also affected. When the need is great and skills in short supply, Different organisations and ideologies need to look for common ground rather than foster Ill feeling. In view of that I intend to come to the conference, but would of course be delighted to meet you and discuss these issues should you chose to.

I’m relieved to discover you have a sense of humour, even if you are rather insulting!
But should psychoanalysts have to resort to the law to resolve their differences? I don’t think Lacan would have approved. It seems a long way from free association.

Yes, Dear Doctor, that’s why the justice comes in. In Iran psychiatrists do claim to be psychoanalysts too, solely because they are psychiatrists!!! Without any training in psychoanalysis, and even without having been analyzed themselves!!! These kinds of so-called congresses are held to misuse and abuse the reputation of people like you to prove that this is the case in the entire world! And what comes in above of this scandal is that, since the office of actual Minister of Health, this ministry too does claim that “the business of psychiatrist is psychoanalysis” (sic)! That man, the Minister, has two girls who are psychiatrists! There is not a single psychoanalyst among organizers of this so-called congress, and not even a single one who has been trained in psychotherapy. But they dare to hold a congress on “psychoanalysis and dynamic psychotherapy”. The horror is complete when you realize that the president of this so-called congress is a GP who pretended to be a psychiatrist for more than thirty years!
In the last two years, we have practiced a serious “free association” in our official website about this Master Liar. The result was one to five nights in prison for sixteen members of Freudian Association. It was my Open Letter to the Head of Judiciary who alarmed high authorities and opened our way to a lawsuit.
If you feel “minor differences” between yourself and a person who is accused of:
Title counterfeiting as psychiatrist for thirty years
Title counterfeiting as psychotherapist for thirty years
Title counterfeiting as psychoanalyst for thirty years
We do not!

Actually that is a very helpful letter; so thanks. I still intend to come – my flight is booked and no refund available. I am hoping to learn about the psycho situation in Iran, and you have opened the door to that already. Although not a psychoanalyst, I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, and registered as such. In the UK only people who are members of the IPA call themselves psychoanalysts – the rest are psychoanalytic psychotherapists (like me, X 3 per week) or psychodynamic psychotherapists (x2 per week). The Lacanians all call themselves psychoanalysts, although not members of the IPA. I still am not sure how much all this matters; but of course people shouldn’t mislead the public, the authorities, or worst of all, themselves!

What matters is precisely these X2 per week, X3 per week, X4 per week, and so on…these many times per week extended along many years. What is called a training, a very exacting and time consuming training. Or do you think these trainings are useless?
Furthermore, I do not understand what do you mean by “Lacanians”. Is this abbreviation meant to hide something? If by it you mean lacanian psychoanalysts why do you repress this last word? “Lacanians” is a very vague word. Lacan has influenced many fields in human knowledge, so a critic of art may be “Lacanian”. I do not think he could pretend to be a psychoanalyst.
You say you are registered as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. So, you and me say the same thing, namely the necessity of a training and of a recognition. For lacanian psychoanalysts this recognition is offered by WAP (World Association of Psychoanalysis). The main issue between Lacan and IPA was precisely the question of training: Lacan considered the standardized training offered by IPA was not sufficient and sometimes not graceful. So, Lacan would be very glad to see us taking actions against charlatans who lack any training.
I know in the UK lacanian psychoanalysts are not numerous and you are right to say “In the UK only people who are members of the IPA call themselves psychoanalysts”. “Lacanians” who are “registered” in WAP are some 1800 in the entire world.
A correction to a statement in my last email is necessary: The result was one to five nights in prison for sixteen members of Freudian Association, after having been beaten severely.
I am thinking this correspondence is becoming interesting and maybe I publish it in our official website. It would elucidate some thirsty people.
By the way, are you paying yourself your flight? If so it’s a shame.
