Recently a news on holding an “Iranian Congress of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychotherapy” was released in a Telegram channel where your name is mentioned as one of the speakers of the so-called Congress. As Freudian Association is the only official organization of psychoanalysis in Iran which has been working under the license of the Interior Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran since 2006, and as the Board members of the Association has raised a legal complaint against one of the responsibles of the so-called congress with the following charges:
Title counterfeiting as psychiatrist for thirty years
Title counterfeiting as psychotherapist for thirty years
Title counterfeiting as psychoanalyst for thirty years
along with other charges and against other people, so the case is under investigation in Government Employees Court by the third branch interrogations office at the moment, hence we are informing you that if the information is authenticated, Freudian Association will reserve its right to pursue this case legally with all of its force against you as an accessory.
It is notified that Freudian Association has started to extensively reveal the facts about this person’s academic degree in its official website since two years ago, so that nobody of his colleagues, relatives and acquaintances can claim not being aware about this matter.

The text of this letter is also mentioned in the Freudian Association complaint at the Government Employees Court.

I am in receipt of your email and attached letter of October 31st 2016 (copied below my signature) and obviously I am concerned about your communication.
You warn me that my participation next week in the so-called “Second Congress in Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy” (scheduled for November 9th to 11th in Tehran) would render me an “accessory” to a legal crime in Iran because the so-called “Freudian Association of Iran” claims to have reserved for itself with the legitimate Government of Iran exclusive rights to the title of “psychoanalyst” and other related charges. You further warn me that your Association may take action against me if I participate in this Congress.
Please know that, in responding to you as I am so doing in what follows, I am not representing any affiliation with the organizers of this Congress, nor do I have any personal relations with any of them (nor indeed do I even know whoever is the individual that your communication refers to, without naming him or her, as “counterfeiting”). Indeed, although I am a member of the “International Psychoanalytic Association,” I am not representing any organization, nor am I affiliated with any governmental agency, or the like. In short, I stand and speak for no one other than myself.
What I am, however, is a psychoanalyst in clinical practice for over 40 years, who has been invited, as a publishing and published psychoanalyst, to present, as a keynote speaker and workshop leader, some of what I understand about psychoanalysis, including a paper titled “Embracing Otherwise Otherness: Eroticism and Deathfulness in Psychoanalysis.” I am attaching an abbreviated resumé about my involvement with psychoanalysis.
For me, speaking about psychoanalysis is not an issue of individual or organizational loyalties and affiliations, nor of the egregious politics that have so often contaminated psychoanalysis since the early days of its inception. Indeed, for me to decide to speak or not to speak on the basis of such issues of loyalty and politics would be, in my opinion, egregiously anti‑psychoanalytic.
What I do know is that Sigmund Freud (whatever his misjudgment in convening the “Secret Committee” of 1912, or with respect to other aspects of his leadership) stood fundamentally for the pursuit of truth, even if the notion of “truth” is controversial. What I also know is that Jacques Lacan, whose writings I have seriously studied for almost forty years, and whom I met and conversed with socially (and in a manner that was mutually respectful) in 1975 when he undertook his tour of the eastern regions of the USA, stood for truth (again, even if his approach to the issue of what “truthfulness” might be is contested). Surely you would agree that: Psychoanalysis is worthless unless it is understood to be the rigorous and unflinching pursuit of the truthfulness of the unconscious. My firm belief is that neither Freud nor Lacan would approve of a person stifling his speaking as a psychoanalyst on the basis of governmental regulation or intimidation.
In any event, unless I am mistaken, I do not think it would be seemly for me, in reaction to your communication, to modify my intention to speak at this Congress ‑‑‑ assuming I am issued a visa to travel to Iran. I would, however, be pleased to know why exactly you think I should decline to participate. Moreover, I hope that, if we meet in Tehran, we will be able to understand each other better. I remain firm in my conviction that I must, and have the right to, speak about my own pursuit of truthfulness as a psychoanalyst, who studies and tries to heal the human condition within the humble confines of my clinical practice.
I trust, perhaps naively, that both the organizers of the “Second Congress in Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy” andthe members of your “Freudian Association of Iran” subscribe to what I know to be the precious lineage and discipline of psychoanalytic thinking.

Sorry for the happenings.
The legal document is not in Arabic but in Persian. In Iran, we speak Persian not Arabic. It seems very strange to me to embark for a country you don’t even know what language is spoken in to give a speech about psychoanalysis in a congress you don’t know, again, the organizers!
It is not a question of politics in this matter but a crime. What is egregious is your total absence of knowledge about the situation and your prejudice. Because I have already clarified some of those prejudices in my correspondence with Dr. Jeremy Holmes, and because I have published that correspondence in our official website “to elucidate some thirsty people” I simply send you the link of this publication.
I naturally stay in your disposition for further clarification, if necessary.
By the way, “the so-called Freudian Association” is a NGO, Non-Governmental Organization! That’s why we can say the truth about the Minister of Health in our website!

Thank you for your email of November 4th … I do know that the language of Iran is Persian not Arabic, I regret I made such a slip when writing while exhausted, and I apologize if it was offensive.
I do not find it at all strange to speak about psychoanalysis in a country or culture about which I know little…living here in Africa, I am frequently talking about the discipline to groups that are very culturally and linguistically distant from my own nomadic formation. The point, I think, is to respect differences and to try to understand how psychoanalysis, might or might not, be relevant to that culture/country … this surely was — to give just one example — why Freud engaged in a lengthy discussions with Girindrasekhar Bose? Moreover, I have long wanted to visit Iran and am looking forward to doing so, whether now or at some later date.
Nor do I find it all that strange to agree to speak at a Congress that is purportedly psychoanalytic but in relation to which I do not know any of the organizers. After all, if one only spoke in the company of friends, how dull would life be? I have always made a practice of speaking wherever I was invited (assuming I felt I could say something useful). Moreover, as for your reference to “crime” as distinct from “politics,” I confess I am not at all clear what the significance of the difference might be. Nor am I clear what the “crime” is that you refer to, especially since it seems, from the Persian document you sent me, that you might be charging me with some sort of infraction.
You write that your “Freudian Association” is a non-governmental organization, but then I remain even more puzzled by your position of threatening to invoke legal forces against me as an “accessory” to a crime of which I am entirely unaware.
I regret very much that your prejudice seems to have been to have taken a dislike to me, and decided to aggressively threaten me, without knowing me. I think perhaps we should discontinue this thread of email communications in the hope that we shall one day soon be able to speak in person.

Why do you think I have taken a dislike in you? After all I only know you by your letters, and they are gentle and polite. As a psychoanalyst, you know very well that the truth is harsh, and I am only telling you some truths. I do not dislike your person but I do dislike ignorance and naivety. In French law and in Iranian law the first amendment is “Nobody has the right to be ignorant of the Law”! Freud has taught us that in every illness there exist two gains: primary and secondary. And Lacan taught me that every action of human beings contains a gain – a jouissance. So, every action – or absence of action – of human beings must be met by a “WHY?”, especially, again, by a psychoanalyst. Why is he doing this, why she does not do that? You had to ask yourself “why are they inviting me?”. It is strange you didn’t do that. Or perhaps you asked yourself this question and you hastily answered to yourself “why not?”!
You know, at the present time there are two or three dozen of young Iranian women in prisons of some countries in South- East Asia for smuggling drugs. All of them are victims of a simple proposition: a free travel as ambassadors of young Iranian women! They didn’t know their suitcases were fiddled. The Justice in these countries rightly sent them to prison: they were guilty of not having asked themselves “WHY?”. Or they have asked themselves “why?” and hastily answered themselves “why not? I am young and beautiful and attracting and…”.
There is something you ostensibly do not want to see. What is this another nonsense: “The point, I think, is to respect differences and to try to understand how psychoanalysis, might or might not, be relevant to that culture/country …”??!! After all I, a member of World Association of Psychoanalysis, am working in this country and in this culture for more than twenty years!!! Our NGO is a place where I am training future psychoanalysts of this country! This NGO exists since ten years ego! And I can count a hundred more facts! It was not easy to achieve all these, and again and again our life has been rendered more difficult by people like you who find their “life is dull” and want have some fun.
Dear Dr. Barratt, it could be that, unconsciously, you are very pleased with yourself to have brought some “culture” for Africans. After all It was the greatest zeal of “Whites” for many centuries. And as Freud taught us these kinds of lust do not die easily.
I assure you that I shall be very pleased to meet you and talk to you in person, should you don’t take my telling some truths as offences.
I think I perhaps publish this correspondence, too, in our website.
