Open Letter – Part three: Mazandaran belongs to the Mazandaranis

Esteemed Chief Justice,

Greetings and respect.

Allow me to take you back from the summer of 1980 to the summer of 2023, to the 8th of September, 2023. The members of the Freudian Association, who, alongside their other endeavors, conduct extensive research in the field of cultural heritage, had returned to the village of Amre in Sari County to pursue their research. It’s worth mentioning that before Mazandaran Province, they had conducted research in 9 other provinces. Their research, a glimpse of which is regularly shared on the Instagram page of this association named “OurbeautifulIran,” has been published in approximately 700 posts on this page. The previous provinces included Semnan, Hormozgan, South Khorasan, Tehran, Kermanshah, Gilan, Qazvin, Fars, and Hamadan. However, their journey to Mazandaran Province and their research in this province were a shock and a significant setback for them. They did not see anything but devastation and regret in this province, to the extent that on that Instagram page, they published several posts under the title “Sari, a City of Cultural Heritage Calamities.”

Now, for the third time, they had returned to an awe-inspiring historical site. Since morning, those who seemed to have come to that place for a picnic had sent their children into the midst of their tents to play football while they themselves played cards at a distant spot and danced to Qasemabadi music. Their intention was to drive those six women away from there with this trick. When they finally managed to persuade those women to leave, suddenly about 13-14 men and women approached them, shouting and screaming. They claimed that this place was only for the use of the villagers of Amre, as it was their nature and their forest, and that people from Tehran had no right to come here and… Then two men with these characteristics, one a scruffy, stout bearded man with a hat and glasses wearing a blue shirt over his trousers, and the other a tall and bulky bearded man with glasses wearing a blue linen shirt over his trousers, threatened those women that they would confiscate their cars and force them to leave the area. The stout man told the tall man to call for backup via the walkie-talkie so they could gather their group.

Less than two hours later, six armed NAJA officers and ten plainclothes individuals arrived at that historical site in six vehicles and detained those women. They also confiscated both their cars and all their belongings. The scruffy man said to those women, “So that the people from Tehran understand they shouldn’t come here, so they understand that Mazandaran is for Mazandaranis.”

One of the women told the scruffy man, “We are going to the police station to resolve this misunderstanding, and then we will return here in two hours.” The scruffy man replied, “In that case, I will come to you myself at night.” He made this threat in front of the eyes of those 16 men and some of the tourists and the person in charge of that location. That woman reminded him of this fact and called all of them as witnesses.

I would like to conclude my remarks here and continue further in the coming letters.

With respect and gratitude,

Dr. Mitra Kadivar
