Nowruz: Colors of celebration and new interpretation of ancient traditions

Turkmenistan citizens celebrates National Spring Holiday 0 International Nowruz Day, in the atmosphere of emotional raise. The events in the capital have been expanded at the bank of the Karakum River. Guests and participants of the celebration in honor of the spring and awakening of the nature, which symbolize harmony between people, good neighborliness and friendship, have come to the place of event in the morning.

Improvised city, which re-creates traditional Turkmen life with main rites, white tents, sitting podiums covered with carpets in details, has expanded on the bank of the Karakum River. Special features of its geography are highlighted by crafting workshops and exhibition stands, which look like shopping tents, next to which crowded action is going on as it was in the old days at oriental bazaars, which appeared along trade routes between the cities, countries and regions.

Children were the first to meet the guests of the event at the main entrance to celebration place. Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers, heads of the Mejlis, ministries and departments, military and law enforcement agencies, various establishments and public organizations, representatives of mass media were among the participants of the event. 

Nowruz is not just a spring arrival but also a bow to awakening land. It is a messenger of understanding between people. That is why this is one of the most remarkable and important celebrations of entire humankind, which is observed as International Nowruz Day since 2010.

Turkmen celebration has announced the start of Nowruz – a New Day, a New Year, with first sounds of the drums. Exhibition of carpet production and museum values opens the gallery of national traditions. The song about Nowruz arrival, which invites everyone to join the celebration, has been sung. Music and dance performance was also started.

Bright stage play of national art with songs and dances has been presented by students of Aman Kekilov Pedagogic School, Turkmen State Art and Culture School, Maya KUliyev Turkmen National Conservatory, art ensembles of cultural and education facilities. Exhibition of women handcraft items like refined embroidery, mascots, fabrics, carpet production, souvenirs and other, has been expanded in this place.

Folk bands have presented a stage play demonstrating customs relation to cooking of the main ritual dish of Nowruz – the seeds.

Science, pages of its history, on which theatre artists have created the images of outstanding scientists of the East who made big input to the development of philosophy, medicine, mathematics, astronomy and other science, were the one of thematic sections of big costumed show.

Exhibition part of the event was continued with agricultural exposition presenting rich national traditions of framing and fruits of Turkmen land. Springs of wheat, which is one of the main attributes of Nowruz, were green all around the place.

The slogan of 2021 has been reflected in the plot of the stage play “Turkmenistan – Home of Peace, Friendship and Fraternity”, in which artists performed dances of the peoples of the world, which also celebrate Nowruz as Turkmen people do.

Having announced march 21 as International Nowruz Day, the United Nations urged to celebrate this holiday as a holiday, which strengthens peaceful relations between the nations and ascertains the ideals of friendship, fraternity and humanity.

Exhibition of books of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, based on which many stage plays have been demonstrated at current celebration, has been presented on separate gorund.

Further, textile exhibition has been presented. Modernization of existing and construction of new processing facilities of the country allow increasing the variety and production volumes of quality Turkmen textile from natural silk and cotton, developing production of new readymade garments, which successfully replace foreign production.

Awakening and stirring music of drums were sounded again. This is a group of drummers continue musical canvas of the celebration forestalling its next part – national sport games.

The performance of bakhshy ensemble of Maya Kuliyeva Turkmen National Conservatory has brought in a unique charm to the palette of the celebration where ancient music and songs interweaved with popular rhythms of our days.

All of these was supplemented with the exhibition of various agricultural production of local make as Nowruz opens new farming season.

Big attention of the participants of the celebration was attracted with exposition organized by the Museum of Visual Arts of Turkmenistan, which presented rich creative heritage of Turkmen people and modern art life of the country. The subject of national crafts was continued by masters of national musical instruments and jewelry.

The time for the celebration concert has come at the main stage, which is decorated with bright carpets and framed with 14 «ak öýi» tents, which symbolize the 140th anniversary of Ashgabat that would be widely celebrated in May on the Day of the city.

In meantime, congratulation message of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the fellow countrymen on occasion of National Spring Holiday – International Nowruz Day, has been read out in ceremonial atmosphere.

Further, the concert of the art masters of the country, which program included literary and musical, folk and ethnographic compositions, dances, lyrical national song and modern works, has taken place.

Ringing voices were heard from high swings surrounded by the youth. To ride the swings is thought to be a spiritual purification ritual, which allows entering a new year with new power and light thoughts. The event has been finished with the kushtdepdy dance.

Celebration concerts and cultural events have been held in all administrative centers of the regions of the country. The events in honor of Nowruz will also be continued on the next day, March 22.
